What is GST?
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. Introduced in 2017, it replaced multiple indirect taxes such as VAT, service tax, and excise duty with a single unified tax system. GST is charged at different rates depending on the type of product or service, with the most common slabs being 0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%.
For businesses, correctly calculating GST is essential to ensure accurate invoicing, tax compliance, and financial reporting. Whether you’re creating an invoice, determining the tax component of a product price, or verifying supplier invoices, a GST calculator helps eliminate manual errors and saves time.
GST Calculator Formula
The GST calculation depends on whether the amount entered is exclusive of GST or inclusive of GST.
When GST is Exclusive
GST Amount = Original Amount × (GST Rate ÷ 100)
Final Amount = Original Amount + GST Amount
Example:
If the original amount is ₹10,000 and GST is 18%,
- GST Amount = ₹10,000 × 18% = ₹1,800
- Final Amount = ₹11,800
When GST is Inclusive
Original Amount = Inclusive Amount ÷ (1 + GST Rate ÷ 100)
GST Amount = Inclusive Amount − Original Amount
Example:
If the invoice amount is ₹11,800 (inclusive of 18% GST),
- Original Amount = ₹10,000
- GST Amount = ₹1,800
This calculation is useful when the tax is already included in the selling price and you want to determine the taxable value.

Understanding CGST, SGST and IGST
Under India’s GST framework, the type of GST charged depends on whether the transaction takes place within the same state or between two different states.
CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax)
CGST is collected by the Central Government on transactions where both the buyer and seller are located in the same state. It represents half of the total GST charged on an intra-state transaction.
For example, if GST applicable on a product is 18%, then 9% is charged as CGST.
SGST (State Goods and Services Tax)
SGST is collected by the respective State Government on the same intra-state transaction. Together, CGST and SGST make up the total GST applicable.
Using the previous example, an 18% GST would be split into:
- CGST = 9%
- SGST = 9%
IGST (Integrated Goods and Services Tax)
IGST is applicable when goods or services are supplied from one state to another. Instead of splitting the tax into CGST and SGST, the entire GST amount is charged as IGST and later distributed between the Central and State Governments.
For example, if a business in Maharashtra sells goods to a customer in Karnataka with an applicable GST rate of 18%, the invoice will include 18% IGST instead of 9% CGST and 9% SGST.
Understanding these tax structures helps businesses create compliant invoices and accurately calculate their tax liabilities.
